From Dreams to Reality

A few years ago, I had the honor of hearing John C. Maxwell speak at a conference. He was speaking on the principles of success and how had achieved his level of excellence.

He described it in terms of chopping down trees. He said that you have to go out to the forest every day find the tree you want to cut down and start chopping. You might not chop the tree down in one day, so it could take some time and will no doubt take effort. But it takes a routine of going out and hacking at the tree. Even if it's just 5 chops a day. If you go out there and hit it 5 times, it will eventually fall and you will achieve your goal.

On a more personal note, he addressed his own success. He said that many people have come up to him with the desire to duplicate his success. As a part of his response, he made it clear that it was not easy. He did things that other people were unwilling to do. He was the lumberjack that, even on the worst of days, got up every day and took a whack at the tree he was chopping. He approached his goals with such intensity, that it was inevitable that success was on the horizon.

But I remember the words that he spoke that would naively think his success came easy: "A lot of people would like to do what I do. But not many are willing to do what I did."

Chase your dreams. Keep the faith. Never give up.
